1926: Start of flood prevention work on the San Antonio River south of
downtown includes removal of the unused 1868 mill building upstream and its
dam.
1929: Six concrete storage tanks cap company expansion.
1932: Introduction of Breakfast Treat wheat cereal marks Pioneer's entry
into consumer convenience foods. Depression-fighting techniques include Red
Cross Flour made from government-owned wheat and cloth flour sacks designed for
recycling into clothes and curtains.
1936: Promotion to maintain market strength is accompanied by the opening
of new branch warehouses in Austin and Corpus Christi, followed by ones in
Victoria, Brenham and Wharton. Spanish mill restoration at San Jose Mission
includes wooden equipment designed by Pioneer's mill engineer Ernst Schuchard,
also a family member.
1940: Pioneer has a prize-winning entry in the first modern-day Fiesta
River Parade, dedicating the new San Antonio River Walk.
1943: Wartime food regulations lead to production of Kaffarina cereal,
reducing wheat use by supplementing with two-thirds cornmeal. Vitamin
enrichment is expanded to all flours.
1945: Pioneer President Erhard Guenther dies at 75 and is succeeded by a
nephew, Adolph Guenther Beckmann.
1948: Six months of work by Alfred Beckmann in the company test kitchen
leads to the development of Pioneer Biscuit Mix, a value-added Pioneer product.
1950: Biscuit mix success results in the construction of a new building
for prepared mixes, soon including cake, pancake and cornmeal mixes.
